Several programs crash when I quit them

Postby Change » Wed Jul 14, 2004 10:00 pm

Hi,

Since installing ShellEnhancer (great program btw!), several programs crash when I quit them. When I quite SE first, those programs do not crash. Any idea what this could be related to?

(I've submitted two bug reports about this before I found the forum)

Edit:
List of programs
- NotesHolder
- NewsLeecher
- Oubliette added 16 July

- MediaMonkey (gives an error when selecting songs, choose "Play Now" and an external player open)

Thank you for mentioning these programs.
It is an issue with the current ShellEnhancer 2.0 Beta. Sometimes programs crash when they are closed. Unfortunately it doesn't happen with all programs, so it's difficult to pin point the problem. But now, I have 2 more programs that cause the crash, so perhaps I will be able to narrow it down.

Okay, I hope you find the problem!! :) I'd love to use this program but due to these crashes (especially the MediaMonkey one), I can't really use it yet :(

Similar Problem here...

I encounter the same kind of problems with my Java applications (FreeMind, WebMethods). They start just fine but when I start to work with them, they suddenly close.

I have no other choice than to close SE when working with these applications but I hate to do that :)

Ok, thank you for mentioning these other apps.
I will definitely take a look at them, and I just have to find the problem.

I think this might be related to the fact that ShellEnhancer seems to prevent Windows from sending a "destroy" message to some windows. But hey, I'm not a programmer.

ShellEnhancer does not prevent a destroy message, rather the problem is related to subclassing. ShellEnhancer has to subclass windows to be able to do all the stuff that it does. Unfortunately, the subclassing system of Windows is not that great and if done something wrong it might crash :( Specific to ShellEnhancer, it seems to be a ordering problem. ShellEnhancer unsubclasses some windows at the wrong time causing them to crash. Unfortunately, i don't have found a decent solution yet.... but i will ;)

Hi,

Thank you for this great application, I tired all shareware (actualtools, absolutesoft....) but this is the best app around and it's FREE!

My "Crashing List":

NetCaptop
TheBat! (have problems displaying send/recieve mails window)
EdHTML

Is there a way to exclude this apps from using SE advanced features?

Regards,
Thommas

Are you running the latest version (2.0 Beta)? See http://www.nuonsoft.net/shellenhancer/

Yes, I have the latest version.

Is there any way to exclude specific applications from being enhanced?

Not really, however you can try to add an automanaged rule for a certain window and simply disable all extras for that rule. Maybe that will work.

Hi,

There is a nasty shutdown issue with SE + the latest versions of Winamp: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php ... did=238866
Adding Winamp to the automanaged list with no extras does not solve this issue.

Cheers,
Robin

That's very strange.
I'm running Winamp 5.13 myself and don't have such problems.
I'll see what can be done about this.

just to confirm, have just discovered that SE seems to be the cause of the same issue i've been experiencing with winamp, i.e. won't terminate unless close SE first (and so doesn't remember playlist = main issue for me).

ps main thread for WA now appears to be here:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=1927331#post1927331

look forward to a hopeful fix from either side asap. meantime, at least we have a workaround ..! 8)

cheers ..

I'm unable to reproduce the problem on test systems. I'm running Winamp 5.13 myself and have no problem with closing it. I will try to install the latest Winamp version.

In any case, the next release will have a complete new backend. It is this backend which is responsible for all the hooking to accomplish all things ShellEnhancer does. The new backend will use a safer mechanism to implement all this, however it will probably require Windows XP or later.
